What I do

Throughout the year, I maintain a blog to help keep students and families informed of the college admissions landscape. I also host free office hours during the application season for high school seniors who don’t otherwise have college counseling support at their school. Most of my contact is with juniors and seniors because it is important to keep the college conversation at an age appropriate level while acknowledging that students develop at different paces. Please see the four-year perspective below.

The Blog

Does anyone read blogs anymore? I’m not so sure, but I suppose writing is a way for me to reflect and maybe pass on some information to anyone who is interested. While my posts are not intended to serve as “official advice,” hopefully they will at least give you something to think about.

If you only have time to read a few posts, here’s the shortlist:

Office Hours

Office hours are intended for students who cannot otherwise afford college counseling support. If you need a quick essay review, insight on a specific college, or you just need someone to hear you out, I’m available for appointment for anyone in the Oceanside area. I’m also open to a weekly drop-in location if there is enough interest. Please fill out an inquiry form if you’re interested.

Please note that these meetings are primarily for high school seniors unless otherwise noted. While parental involvement is also important, that is not the focus of these office hours. Feel free to reach out for individual questions.

“It’s so much easier, and faster, to dispense advice. Listening is the slow work.”

The Four-Year Perspective

Any “four-year plan” is largely a series of tasks—a to-do list that is predictable, yet undeniably important. There are necessary procedures when it comes to applying to college, but it’s always important to consider the bigger picture at an age appropriate level, as described below.

9th Grade - An Exploration of Your World

Before thinking about college, students need to think about high school. You can learn all you want about the current admissions landscape, but given how quickly things change in this field, you must be careful not to look too far ahead. Instead, engage with your school community as much as possible, develop strong work habits and organizational skills, participate in class, and explore your academic and extracurricular interests as much as you can.

10th Grade - An Assessment of What You Need

Sophomore year is tricky. Many students will take their first PSAT, which is essentially a practice test of a practice test. And that pretty much sums up what this year feels like—a holding pattern where the college process is looming, but you’re not quite there yet. Your focus should still be on high school, but it’s also an opportunity to assess your strengths and needs and how that may affect the rest of your high school experience and your transition to college.

11th Grade - The Preparation Begins

It has been said that junior year is the new senior year. College applications tend to dominate the time of first-semester seniors, which then leads to the revelry of second-semester status. But for juniors, this will be the last full year of grades that colleges will consider, which hopefully helps your academic narrative. In many ways, the most critical aspects of the college process take place this year—an intensive and occasionally overwhelming combination of research, preparation, and light soul-searching.

12th Grade - Off You Go

College deadlines are universal, no matter how ready you are. And unfortunately, the process has become more accelerated, not to mention drawn out. Use the summer to get a head start if possible. If you attend a high school with an established college counseling program and timeline, you should do your best to meet their internal deadlines. You should also think about creating an individualized schedule to help you manage your responsibilities. It is inevitable that things will come up along the way, so it is critical that you focus only on what you can control.
